Corruption and democracy under consideration at the Council of Europe
/noticias.info/ Strasbourg, 13.11.2006 – The Council of Europe is holding a conference on “Corruption and Democracy” on 20 and 21 November at the Palais de l’Europe (Room 1) in Strasbourg.
Given the numerous challenges currently facing democracies in Europe, the aims of the conference are:
- To identify the risks that corruption poses to the future of democracy in Europe,
- To share experience and good practice to prevent corruption from undermining democracy,
- To determine whether current anti-corruption standards are sufficient or whether additional work is required by the Council of Europe and other organisations.
Representatives of Justice Ministries, parliamentary assemblies, business associations, special interest groups, criminal justice systems and civil society from the 46 Council of Europe member countries will take part in the conference, along with representatives of other international organisations.
The proceedings will be opened by Guy De Vel, Council of Europe Director General of Legal Affairs, and introduced by Mikhael Grishankov, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Russian State Duma.
The discussions will then take place in workshops focusing on four different subjects:
- political financing,
- conflicts of interest,
- lobbying,
- corruption, democracy and justice.
A panel discussion on “Investigating political corruption: the role of the media” will take place during the last session (on the afternoon of Tuesday 21 November), involving three journalists: Hervé Gattegno of Le Monde (France), Thomas Leif from Netzwerkrecherche/SWR (Germany) and Sergiy Leshchenko from Ukrainskiy Pravda (Ukraine).
Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, will also speak on “Enhancing transparency in Europe”.
The entire conference is open to the press.
