PACE Standing Committee meets in San Marino

/noticias.info/ Strasbourg, 13.11.2006 – The Standing Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) will meet in San Marino on Friday 17 November 2006, two days after San Marino takes over the six-month Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s executive body, the Committee of Ministers.

The Standing Committee acts on behalf of the Assembly between plenary sessions, bringing together some 80 parliamentarians from the Council of Europe’s 46 member states.

Following the opening of the meeting by PACE President René van der Linden, the committee will hold an exchange of views with San Marino’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Political Affairs Fiorenzo Stolfi on the priorities of his six-month chairmanship (foreseen between 9 and 10 a.m.).

The agenda includes debates on the rights of national minorities in Latvia, seal hunting, sexual assaults linked to “date-rape drugs”, and the need for greater transparency in the arms trade.

The parliamentarians will also hold a debate on the situation in Kazakhstan and its relations with the Council of Europe, attended by a five-member delegation from the Kazakh Parliament, which has signed a co-operation agreement with the Assembly.

Other reports to be discussed include “The establishment of a Stability Pact for the South Caucasus” and “The Turkish presence in Europe: migrant workers and new European citizens”.

The Standing Committee will also adopt a declaration on violence against women ahead of the launch of a Council of Europe campaign on this theme in Madrid on 27 November 2006.

The parliamentarians are due to meet the Captains Regent of San Marino, Antonio Carattoni and Roberto Giorgetti, during an audience at the Parliament Hall (Palazzo Pubblico) on the eve of the meeting.
