Haaretz comments: "The findings of Major-General (res.) Doron Almog's probe of the recent war in Lebanon, which have so far been only partially revealed, constitute additional evidence to bolster what has been discovered since the war about the condition of the Israel Defense Forces. There is an unbridgeable gap between the threatening declarations the government is making toward Iran and the weakness the IDF is transmitting. One can always explain away mishaps and accidents as localized failures, but when they accumulate one on top of the other, they create a frightening view of the situation. Another inquiry and another inquiry and another investigation, committee and examination, and there is no leadership. If half the major generals in the General Staff think the chief of General Staff should go, it's not clear what the defense minister is waiting for. If Dan Halutz does not leave of his own volition, then Amir Peretz should recommend that the government send him off. It's impossible for an army like this 'to scare Iran,' as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert put it when he went to visit the United States."
The Jerusalem Post writes: "Perhaps someone ought to give Jewish Agency chairman Ze'ev Bielski a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People. Why would an Israeli official deeply involved in Israeli-Diaspora relations say that American Jews 'have no future as Jews' - a sentiment that he himself called "a mistake" when author A.B. Yehoshua said the same thing just a short time ago? ...The demographic crisis facing American Jewry cannot and should not be denied. Yet the idea of wholesale aliya as the solution makes no sense even if it were not bordering on the delusionary... Israel must reciprocate - not by denigrating American Jewry, but by extending concrete moral, communal and financial support for Jewish revival. Israel could, for example, help provide bank guarantees for a comprehensive student loan program to greatly reduce the financial burden of Jewish education in America. The Jewish state should be a source of out-of-the-box solutions, not off-the-wall insults."
Yediot Aharonot comments on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's White House meeting with US President George W. Bush. The editor points out that while these meetings often appear low-keyed, they can determine history.
Yediot Aharonot, in its second editorial, cites the adage, "Failure is not an orphan," to make a point about Brig.-Gen. Gal Hirsch, who resigned following the Almog Report. Hirsch served for 25 years, almost always in positions which were difficult, sensitive, and combat-oriented. The editors decry that he was targeted from the war's outset and that all the subsequent failures were placed on his shoulders. They thank Hirsch profusely for his service and assert that he will not be the only one who leaves.
Yediot Aharonot, in its third editorial, comments on the participation of six government ministers at the current United Jewish Communities General Assembly in Los Angeles. The editors believe that the entire Israeli government should appear on stage to thank the American Jewish community.
Hatzofeh asks why the Almog Report did not go further and point a finger at Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz. There were early warnings that Hizbullah would attempt to kidnap soldiers, so why did Halutz not check that his divisions were ready? Defense Minister Amir Peretz should send Halutz home forthwith. notas_de_prensa_archivo
