Animal welfare: closing the gap between law and reality
/noticias.info/ Strasbourg, 15.11.2006 – Closing the gap between legislation meant to assure proper animal welfare across Europe and real practice – from care for animals to their transport – will be the focus of an international workshop at the Council of Europe on 23-24 November 2006 (Room 1, Palais de l’Europe).
Co-organised by the World Organisation for Animal Health, the European Commission and the Council of Europe’s Animal Welfare Unit, the workshop will examine how current laws and standards on animal welfare across Europe are carried out. It will study the most comprehensive survey so far on the subject, including the participation of most all Eastern European and Balkan countries, from Russia to Croatia.
National veterinary and government officials from some 50 countries will share their experiences in promoting and carrying out animal welfare legislation, to achieve a better common understanding of animal welfare rules and practices. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange best practice ideas and discuss how to overcome social, legal, economic and scientific obstacles that can hinder the effective practice of animal welfare legislation.
The workshop will also address the role of international organisations in promoting and developing animal welfare, the added value of transnational cooperation, and ways to improve such cooperation.
Workshop participants will be open to meeting members of the press on 24 November.
