GOLF: PGA TOUR: Adams Golf introduces two new fully matched combo sets

GolfWeb Equipment Correspondent

And the Ideas just keep on coming from Adams Golf.

As the company looks ahead to 2007, Adams Golf is introducing two new combo sets of clubs: Idea Pro Hybrid, featuring forged irons for better players; and Idea Tech OS, an easy-to-hit lineup meshing technology with forgiveness.

Foremost, Adams continues to promote the idea that matched combo sets of hybrids and irons are better than purchasing a set of irons and dissimilar hybrids.

“A fully matched, integrated set provides golfers with the correct gap between clubs, the correct length and lie, and an ease of use,” said Chip Brewer, Adams Golf president. “With unmatched sets, and individual clubs, the likelihood of your clubs performing well is much less.”

The two new sets join Adams’ existing family of Idea A2 and A2 OS clubs. The Pro Hybrid models are available now while Tech OS begins shipping in December.

In early demo sessions, both new Idea sets received favorable reviews from a variety of GolfWeb testers.

On tour, Adams’ hybrids continue to be hugely popular, often leading the hybrid counts at PGA TOUR, Champions and Nationwide tour events. Many of the pros playing Adams hybrids are not paid to do so. The company’s tour staff includes Tom Watson, D.A. Weibring, Dana Quigley, Jerry Pate, Allen Doyle, Bubba Dickerson and Jose Maria Canizares.

Doyle and Quigley, by the way, play fully integrated Adams sets. The lowest iron in Doyle’s bag is a 6-iron. Quigley’s lowest is a 7-iron. The rest of their sets comprise iWood and Hybrid clubs.

Here’s a closer look at the latest from Adams Golf.

IDEA PRO SET

Adams introduced the Pro Hybrid iWoods this past summer and now expands the line into a fully integrated combo set.

Packaged together, the Idea Pro set comprises Nos. 3 and 4 iWoods with 20 and 23 degrees of loft, respectively, packaged with Nos. 5-PW forged irons. As options, matching Nos. 3 and 4 irons, plus gap, sand and lob wedges are available.

“Everything about these new clubs has been engineered for the better player,” said Brewer. “These are premium performance clubs, as our tour players have shown.”

The Idea Pro iWoods feature pull-face construction with a custom steel face, designed for low spin and enhanced ball speed. There’s also an adjustable weight screw in the sole to allow for swingweight and shaft adjustment.

The forged irons are made from soft carbon steel to enhance feel and workability. The irons have a thin topline, narrow sole and minimum offset, along with a slight cavityback design.

The iWoods come with Aldila graphite shafts, the irons with stepless, gold nickel plated True Temper Black Gold steel steel shafts. Three flexes are available.

A consensus of GolfWeb testers, including several pros and better amateurs, praised the Idea Pro irons as solid and very workable with a “very good feel and weighting.”

The iWoods were rated “excellent,” versatile from a variety of lies, with very satisfactory trajectories. One tester said, “You can just feel the energy transfer from the clubhead to the ball and into the air.”

Suggested retail prices for the Adam's Pro set are $899 with steel shafts in the irons, $1,099 with all graphite shafts.

IDEA TECH OS SETS

Like it has done with the Idea A2 OS line, Adams is offering three models of Idea Tech OS sets: regular men, senior and women’s.

The Idea Tech OS set has a list price of $899 per set with steel shafts, $999 with graphite.
The Idea Tech OS set has a list price of $899 per set with steel shafts, $999 with graphite.
“Idea Tech OS is the most premium, technologically advanced and player-friendly set of hybrid irons that we’ve ever created,” said Brewer.

There are three types of clubs within each set: iWoods, hollow design Hybrid irons and multimaterial short irons.

The iWoods have a composite crown to help lower the center of gravity and provide a higher launch angle; a Ti face for increased ball speed; and a heel-biased adjustable weight port in the sole.

The hollow design Hybrid irons transition the launch conditions between the more wood-like iWoods and the short irons with consistent yardage gapping. The Hybrid irons also have a Ti face and heel-biased adjustable weight port, along with a composite back plate.

Three metals are meshed in the TriTech short irons to provide increased ball speed, stability and forgiveness. The irons have a Ti face, tungsten weighting in the sole and a stainless steel chasis. A vibration dampening system helps enhance feel and sound.

“During three years of development, we analyzed the combined effect of titanium faces, carbon crowns and sole weights on ball flight and forgiveness,” said Tim Reed, Adams Golf vp of research & development. “The result is a hybrid iron set with the highest MOI [stability] and lowest CG [center of gravity] in its class.”

The makeup of the regular Idea Tech OS set comprises Nos. 3 and 4 iWoods, Nos. 5 and 6 Hybrid hollow irons and Nos. 7-PW TriTech short irons. The set offers both graphite and steel shafts in the short irons.

The senior and women’s sets each package Nos. 4 and 5 iWoods with Nos. 6 and 7 hollow irons and Nos. 8-SW in short irons, with differing and custom-suited graphite shafts.

Lower iWoods, and optional matching wedges, are also available for all Tech OS sets.

Suggested retail price for the regular Idea Tech OS set is $899 with steel shafts, $999 with all graphite. List prices for the senior and women’s sets are $999 each. notas_de_prensa_archivo
