REGION’S CUP: Bulgaria to host Regions' Cup
/noticias.info/ Europe's top amateur sides will head east next summer after Bulgaria was confirmed as the host nation for the 2007 UEFA Regions' Cup.
Host region
South-East Region AMA, who won their way through to the finals after finishing ahead of sides from Romania, Greece and San Marino on home soil in the Group 7 mini-tournament, will be the hosts for the fifth edition of the tournament following meetings at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon. "It is going to be in Bulgaria," UEFA Youth and Amateur Committee chairman Jim Boyce told uefa.com. "It will be the first UEFA final tournament of any type that Bulgaria has hosted. Bulgaria are grateful for getting a tournament of this type and will put everything into it - pull all the stops out."
'A great honour'
"It is a great honour for Bulgaria to host the UEFA Regions' Cup finals," added Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihaylov. "The UEFA decision is a recognition for the Bulgarian Football Union. We will do our best to organise the tournament to perfection." South-West Region-Sofia AMA reached the final of the last edition of the UEFA Regions' Cup in Poland, losing out in the final to Spanish side Basque Country AMA. Meanwhile, Plovdiv AMA reached the finals of the second UEFA Regions' Cup in Italy in 2001.
'Wonderful opportunity'
Boyce was delighted at the prospect of another edition, saying: "I can speak for a lot of the teams. This has given lads who have never dreamt of playing in European competition a wonderful opportunity to do so and everyone is looking forward to the finals." The UEFA Regions' Cup is contested every two years by the best regional sides in the competing nations, or by national teams in smaller nations. A total of 37 nations put forward sides in the current tournament, with teams from Portugal, France, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ukraine and Poland already set to join the hosts in the finals. notas_de_prensa_archivo
