GOLF: SOUTHERN AFRICA TOUR: Inaugural Joburg Open tees off January 2007
/noticias.info/ The 2007 Joburg Open will be a celebration of the best professional golf from Europe and South Africa, brought to the people of Gauteng at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club from January 11 – 14.
This €1-million tournament is a joint venture between the Sunshine Tour and the European Tours and
The collaboration between the Tours and the public sector partnership with the City of Johannesburg, the Gauteng Economic Development Agency and a number of commercial sponsors, including Mesana Technologies and Eskom along with promoter, easygolf Worldwide is guaranteed to raise the profile of this world-class event and South Africa’s standing on the global stage.
“We want everyone in the city to feel that the Joburg Open belongs to them,” said Clr Amos Masondo, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg.
“The tournament will showcase the city and its people to sports lovers throughout the world. We hope that what they see is a dynamic, multi-cultural community and a sophisticated destination that is ideal for events such as this.”
The Joburg Open will be different from other local tournaments in a number of respects, one of which is the unique 200-man field split equally between the two Tours and the format, which will see both the East and West courses at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington used during the event.
One of the key objectives shared by all the parties involved in the Joburg Open is the determination to use the event as a catalyst to broaden the appeal of the game.
To this end, one of the aims of the tournament is to raise funds for the establishment of a development driving range near Diepsloot north of Sandton, that will offer schoolchildren and other members of the community regular coaching sessions.
Those who show talent and persist with their training, will receive free second-hand equipment and,
eventually, club membership.
An educational facility will also, in subsequent years, provide young black matriculants with SETA training in golf club management. The range will be managed by easyGolf, and the land provided by the City of Johannesburg.
“We want the Joburg Open to be a celebration of the city and all its people,” said Clr Amos Masondo. “We are looking forward to an open, exciting event that gets people from all walks of life involved in golf for the first time, whether it’s as enthusiastic spectators, new players, or those who find a career in some aspect of the game.”
The Joburg Open tees off from 11 to 14 January 2007 at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in Johannesburg. Entry is free and there is ample parking space available.
