FOOTBALL EUROPE: Sevilla stride on in Spain
/noticias.info/ A 4-0 win against RC Deportivo La Coruña kept Sevilla FC on top in Spain as Real Madrid CF suffered a humiliating 3-0 home defeat in Wednesday's games.
Kanouté double
Sevilla opened up a four-point lead over second-placed FC Barcelona - who play on Thursday - as Frédéric Kanouté found the target twice against Deportivo. A header from Luis Fabiano and a free-kick from fellow Brazilian Daniel Alves wrapped up the scoring for the UEFA Cup holders at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Shock defeat
Boos greeted Madrid's departure after their shock 3-0 loss at home against RC Recreativo de Huelva. Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Ikechukwu Uche and Emilio Viqueira scored the goals although the visitors' joy was tempered by the fact that three Recreativo fans had been killed, along with the driver, as a supporters' coach crashed on the way to Madrid.
'It was inexplicable'
"We have brought some happiness to our fans but there is no compensation for the loss of a life," said Recreativo coach Marcelino. Madrid coach Capello added: "It was inexplicable. We were unrecognisable out there. Recreativo played very well and deserved to win."
Osasuna run
In the evening's other games, CA Osasuna collected their fifth league win in a row, a 2-1 victory against struggling Levante UD, RCD Espanyol won 1-0 at Getafe CF while fellow UEFA Cup contenders RC Celta de Vigo drew 0-0 at home against Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Real Racing Club Santander were 2-1 winners at home against Villarreal CF while Real Betis Balompié won 1-0 at CG Tarragona. notas_de_prensa_archivo
