GOLF: PGA OF AMERICA: Whitcomb encourages Methodist grads to meet challenges with passion

Brian Whitcomb was the featured speaker at the 34th winter commencement of Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C.

/noticias.info/ Brian Whitcomb, recently elected the 35th president of The PGA of America, encouraged Methodist University graduates to meet the challenges of their future professions with passion and fairness.

"It is my hope that you stay true to yourselves and your values throughout your career," said Whitcomb, who was the featured speaker at the 34th winter commencement of Methodist University, Dec. 16, at the March F. Riddle Center in Fayetteville, N.C.

The designer and director of golf of Lost Tracks Golf Club in Bend, Ore., Whitcomb addressed the school's largest graduating class of 186. Methodist University represents one of 18 colleges or universities nationwide that offer the PGA Professional Golf Management Program curriculum.

"It's important that you can respect everyone from the common man to the CEO," said Whitcomb. "Golf in many ways is like business and life. It can be humbling, just like the business world. It can be exciting; it can be challenging and it can be rewarding."

During his address, the 51-year-old Whitcomb referenced his own initial stages in the golf industry.

He referred to his charitable niche as a Board member and contributor to the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch in Bend, Ore., which combines reviving orphaned horses with therapeutic care for social, mentally and physically disadvantaged children of all ages and backgrounds.

"Be committed to your family and be charitable," said Whitcomb. "It is wise that you stay in contact with those who have influenced your career. And, don't forget to let your work speak louder than you.

"It's important that you find someone to mentor you," said Whitcomb. "And, it is just as important that you then go find someone that you can mentor yourself. This is a key process that will enable you to build, to network with other professionals."

Whitcomb concluded his address by countering a stereotypical argument about society.

"Despite what they say," he said, "good men and women do win and come out all the better for it."

The PGA's Professional Golf Management University Program, a 4.5-year college curriculum for aspiring PGA Professionals. The program provides students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies and internship experience.

The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf. notas_de_prensa_archivo
