GOLF: PGA TOUR: Q&A: Wilson on travelling and winning where it all began
/noticias.info/ Editor's note: Mark Wilson finished tied for 29th place at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament, making him one of 40 new Q-school graduates who will enter the PGA TOUR for the 2007 FedExCup season. Wilson chatted with PGATOUR.com for this Q&A.
PGATOUR.com: Tell me three things not related to golf that you consider must-dos in this lifetime.
WILSON: "A. The experience of being a parent.
"B. Visiting every continent at least once. I have only been on Asia, Australia and North America. I think I could live without seeing Antarctica, but all the others are a must.
"C. Running a marathon. A couple people in the family have done numerous marathons so I would like to try it once.''
PGATOUR.com: What is your wildest golf dream?
WILSON: "If you mean an actual dream while sleeping, I had one where I was playing a tournament and we come to a hole where you have to somehow tee off in a very small space, I mean like the size of a small office cubicle. I watch my playing partners somehow swing their driver in there and rip it down the middle. I stay in the confined space for a few minutes trying to swing, but can’t, then thankfully I wake up. I know my swing is compact, but not that much.”
"If you mean, my aspirations, well, winning the U.S. Bank Championship at Brown Deer where I played in my first ever golf tournament when I was 11 years old.''
PGATOUR.com: What aspect of the playing on the PGA TOUR will make you most nervous next year and why?
WILSON: "I have experienced quite a bit already, but usually that last putt in a tournament where I am in the top 10 makes me the most nervous.''
PGATOUR.com: What was your welcome-to-professional-golf moment?
WILSON: "I think it was my first year as a professional when I managed to qualify for the U.S. Open. I called my fellow Cheesehead, Steve Stricker, and asked if he would mind playing a practice round with me at the Olympic Club. We played on Monday morning and I couldn’t believe how many fans were there just to watch the practice round. This was not the Hooters Tour. Well, somehow I managed to hit my tee shot in the air on the first tee and I was able to learn a lot from Steve that day.''
PGATOUR.com: You’ve been granted a 60-minute sit-down with any figure in the world of golf, living or dead. What’s your first question -- and to whom would you address it?
WILSON: "Francis Quimet. What gave you the confidence to go in untested and stand up to Harry Vardon (the Tiger Woods of his day) in the U.S. Open the way you did? His answer would be good for young golfers when they get a chance to stare down a PGA TOUR player in competition for the first time.''
PGATOUR.com: Describe the menu, from soup to nuts, of your next title celebration dinner. And name the wine pairings.
WILSON: "Appetizers: Just simple soft warm bread to dip in olive oil and grated Parmesan Cheese.
"Soup: Tomato Basil or maybe a Chicken Tortilla
"Salad: I think my favorite salad still is the bottomless one you get at the Olive Garden. I had a Caesar in Tahoe this year that would be next in line.
"Main Course: A Chicken Pasta dish. My favorite would be Penne Pasta, with sliced chicken breast in a light cream sauce consisting of sun-dried tomatoes, capers, black olives and mushrooms.
"I am just beginning to get into wine so I can’t really pair anything up yet. No matter what the dish, I do prefer sweet wine so I tend to go with a Riesling or Gewurztraminer.
Dessert: Crème Brulee or Carrot Cake.''
PGATOUR.com: Name five songs in your iPod.
WILSON: “Hurricane” by Bob Dylan.
“My Immortal” by Evanescense (love to sing along to that one in the car alone)
“Morning Has Broken” by Cat Stevens
“Eye of the Tiger” by Asia
“Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash''
PGATOUR.com: Other than winning a tournament, what would make next year a success?
WILSON: "Trusting in my own game, making my strengths even stronger, and to find a way to be as calm and accepting as possible with every shot I hit.''
PGATOUR.com: Who would you most like to hit balls next to, and why?
WILSON: "Craig Bowden. He is one of the funniest guys I have ever met so being near him keeps me loose.''
PGATOUR.com: You’ve got one more victory coming before you retire. What trophy do you want to hoist and why?
WILSON: The Masters. Growing up in the cold winters in Wisconsin, the Masters was also on TV at about the time when the snow was mostly melted in Milwaukee and I knew the golf season was about to begin. I loved watching every minute of the Masters and feel like I know that golf course pretty well without ever having played it.'' notas_de_prensa_archivo
