AC MILAN: FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE DREAM

Milan will face Bayern Munich for the fourth time in European competition and the third in the Champions League after the draw was made for the quarter-finals stage

Milan have drawn Bayern Munich for the second year running in the Champions League. Last season it was in the round of the last sixteen and this time around they meet in the quarter-finals. The German side won the competition in 2001 and defeat Inter in the group stages this year. Bayern went on to dominate their group without losing a game:

With Ottmar Hitzfeld taking over from Felix Magath as coach, Bayern knocked Real Madrid out in the last round, losing the first leg 3-2 but winning the return 2-1 to go through on the away goals rule. It has been a difficult domestic season for Bayern, with the team exiting the German Cup and falling off the pace at the top of the Bundesliga. They have therefore put their energies into Europe and have a rich tradition in the competition which they have won on four occasions. Their top scorer in Europe is Claudio Pizarro, with four goals from eight appearances but Roy Makaay is also a danger.

Milan have met Bayern on four occasions in European competition and the first three times Milan went on to win the Cup. Last season's encounter came in the round of the last 16 and Milan drew 1-1 in Germany and won the return 4-1 at the San Siro, with Pippo Inzaghi scoring a hat-trick. They also met in the group stages in 2002-03, with Inzaghi again scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Munich and once in the return which was won by the same score. Milan then went on to win the competition against Juventus in Manchester.

The sides have met once in the Cup Winners Cup, in 1967-68 which the Rossoneri won 2-0 in the first leg and drew 0-0 in the return in Germany. The Rossoneri went on to win the Cup 2-0 against Hamburg in the final where Hamrin scored twice. The Champions Cup meeting was in 1989-90 and Marco Van Basten scored the only goal in the first leg while Milan came through 2-1 in the away return after extra time.
