UEFA ORGANISATION: Trophy takes in Buenos Aires
/noticias.info/ The UEFA Champions League trophy visits another footballing hotbed – the Argentinian city of Buenos Aires – for a one-day event on Thursday, on the latest stop of a two-month tour of four Latin American countries to celebrate Europe's premier club competition. The Trophy Tour is presented by Heineken.
Huge enthusiasm
Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city in Argentina and lies on the southern shore of Rio de la Plata. It is a city with a huge enthusiasm for football, with a large number of professional teams hailing from the city. Buenos Aires was the venue for the 1978 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and the Netherlands.
Redondo ambassador
The ambassador for the Buenos Aires leg of the Trophy Tour is Fernando Redondo, the Argentina midfielder who won the UEFA Champions League twice with Real Madrid CF, in 1998 and 2000 and was part of the victorious AC Milan squad in 2003, as well as giving sterling service to CD Tenerife. Other prominent guests from Argentina's football scene include Kily González, a two-time finalist with Valencia CF, and Juan Sebastián Verón, who spent several years in Europe with UC Sampdoria, Parma FC, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester United FC and Chelsea FC.
Trophy on display
The trophy will be the centrepiece of a display, together with signed football memorabilia, a historical movie of the greatest moments in European Cup history and other football activities, including the exclusive chance for invitees to be photographed with the trophy. "The UEFA Champions League is hugely popular in Latin American countries and the chance to experience the famous trophy up close is an opportunity to allow local fans to share in the magic of Europe's best club competition," said UEFA marketing director Philippe Le Floc'h.
Brazil success
Last month, the most coveted trophy in European club football was on show in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where thousands of fans visited the exhibition to have their photo taken with the trophy, and to have autographs signed by former Brazil stars Bebeto, Giovane Elber, Mauro Silva and Paulo Sérgio. Following the Buenos Aires leg, the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour moves to Santiago, Chile (15/16 March); Mexico City, Mexico (5/6 April) and Monterrey, Mexico (12/13 April). notas_de_prensa_archivo
