UEFA ORGANISATION: Best interests at heart
/noticias.info/ The protection and further development of the game is a key focal point of the work of UEFA's Football Committee, which has held its latest meeting at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
Famous ex-players
Chaired by the former Germany star and member of the FIFA Executive Committee Franz Beckenbauer, and featuring famous former players – such as Fernando Hierro, a three-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid CF, and Montenegrin Dejan Savicević, who helped both FK Crvena Zvezda and AC Milan win the European Champion Clubs' Cup in the early 1990s – the committee has the game's best interests at heart from the professional game to the grassroots.
Important duties
The Football Committee has a portfolio of important duties. It draws up recommendations on national team and club issues, the Laws of the Game, player protection and image, and other football-related matters which have an impact on the sport. Its members act as ambassadors/representatives of UEFA at professional, youth and grassroots activities, courses and conferences, and offer help with regard to the production of different technical reports when it is felt appropriate.
Committee priorities
It offers football-related proposals regarding UEFA competitions, and provides support to top-level players and the development of the talented young players who may become the stars of tomorrow. The Football Committee's reflections on major issues also have an impact on referees and coaches while promotional work on behalf of UEFA and football itself is another task on the committee's agenda.
Policy issues
At its Nyon meeting, various policy issues were debated with a view to establishing a set position on disputed goals, goals from forfeited matches and goalscoring awards on the agenda. A policy on disputed goals was agreed in principle, talks took place on the status of goals scored in forfeited matches and the committee said that it was in favour of goalscoring awards in all UEFA competitions, with further studies set to take place.
Technology discussed
The wide issue of technology and referees was discussed. The committee is not in favour of the idea of the video referee, as they felt that this would be disruptive to the game, or to the idea of TV monitors on the bench, as this has the potential to create conflict. LED track advertising is also a hotly-debated issue and requires further research.
Debate on suspensions
The suspension of players and coaches also came under the spotlight. The committee is concerned about the idea of players missing a final because of yellow cards, and is urging further studies into the problem. As far as coaches are concerned, they should always behave properly. However, if they are suspended, they should have the right of appeal, which is not always the case at present. notas_de_prensa_archivo
