Liverpool trailed their Merseyside neighbours Everton FC by three points as they used up their game in hand tonight, but now lead the UEFA Cup contenders on goal difference. Torres took just eight minutes to break the deadlock, turning in Dirk Kuyt's low cross. His second goal arrived just past the hour with a header, and having turned a Steven Gerrard centre on to the woodwork, Torres completed his treble with a cool finish after beating West Ham defender Lucas Neill. Gerrard's long-range shot put the seal on proceedings and leaves Liverpool in good spirits ahead of next week's UEFA Champions League trip to FC Internazionale Milano.
