UEFA CUP: Ferguson keeps feet on the ground

/noticias.info/ Captain Barry Ferguson warned "we're only halfway there" after Rangers FC secured a 2-0 lead against Werder Bremen to take into the second leg of their UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie.

'Quality team'
Daniel Cousin and Steven Davis were on target for the Glasgow club, although visiting goalkeeper Tim Wiese was culpable for both goals. Ferguson, the driving force of Rangers who was making a Scottish record 77th appearance in European competition, said: "We know they're a quality team and we expect a tough game in Germany, so we're not taking anything for granted. We're only halfway there. I thought team performance-wise we worked ever so hard, especially in the first half." Speaking of his milestone, the 30-year-old added: "It was a proud night for me obviously, breaking the record."

Trophy candidates
Bremen stand second in the Bundesliga and had declared themselves contenders to win the UEFA Cup, but Rangers looked more like trophy candidates and their bid for honours on four fronts remains alive. "I think confidence is high in the team just now," continued Ferguson. "Everybody's enjoying themselves, playing with a smile on their face. We were expecting to get a result but getting two goals is important and not conceding is equally important."

'Amazing consistency'
Next Thursday's game is likely to be trickier for the Scottish Premier League leaders, yet Ferguson remains hopeful that Walter Smith's side will be able to finish a job they began so impressively. "We've set our standards and we need to maintain them. We've got every chance but they're a quality team so it'll be a tough task over there," he said, while Smith echoed the words of his captain: "We were delighted with the result obviously but the job is only half done. Werder Bremen have shown an amazing consistency over the last four or five years, so that's what pleased me more than anything else about restricting them to so few opportunities." notas_de_prensa_archivo
