The legendary Reds marksman, fondly nicknamed 'Sir' by those around Anfield, earned what many on Merseyside believe to be belated recognition for his country, as most members of that team had received similar honours years earlier.

It was also a good day for Ian Rush on this day in 1984 as he scored the only goal to secure a 1-0 home win over Sven Goran Eriksson's Benfica in the third round, first leg, of the European Cup.
