LIVERPOOL FC: LFC V MAGPIES: THE LAST FIVE
Liverpoolfc.tv recalls Newcastle's last five visits to Anfield ahead of Saturday's Premier league clash.
/noticias.info/ With Fernando Torres gunning for a third successive home hat-trick, the Toon'll have to be on top form to get anything from a venue where they've not won since 1995.
Alonso scores from his own half versus Newcastle Utd
Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle
Premiership – September 2006
Once could be described as a fluke – but twice? Xabi Alonso's 60-yard hit was his first Liverpool goal since his almost identical effort against Luton Town the previous season, making the Spaniard the only modern player to score consecutive club goals from beyond the half-way line. The game also saw Dirk Kuyt break his Liverpool duck.
Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle
Premiership – December 2005
Goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard helped spoil Michael Owen's first return to Anfield since leaving in 2004. It was an impressive Boxing Day display from Rafa Benitez's side – even more so considering they'd just returned from a gruelling trip to Japan and the World Club Championships. One sour note was the second-half dismissal of Lee Bowyer (his second in this fixture in two seasons) for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso – an incident which almost prompted a brawl between the two sets of players.
Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle
Premiership – December 2004
An own goal from the unfortunate Titus Bramble set the Reds on their way after initially going down to a Patrick Kluivert strike (which replays showed should have been ruled out for offside). Further goals from Neil Mellor and Milan Baros ensured there was no early Christmas present for Graeme Souness and co.
Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
Premiership – May 2004
The end of an era at Anfield as Gerard Houllier took charge for the final time after six years at the club. With Champions League qualification already secured, there was little riding on the game. The highlight came with a beautiful curling pass from Stevie G which Michael Owen hoovered up before slotting past Shay Given. Bon Voyage, Gerard.
Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
FA Cup – January 2004
A brace from the new Zidane (Bruno Cheyrou) saw Liverpool book their place in the fifth round of the Cup. His first came after just one minute, though this was almost immediately cancelled out by a Laurent Robert thunderbolt which the BBC measured at 78mph. And to think some in the Kop had blamed Jerzy Dudek. Cheyrou's second-half winner was easy pickings after a sublime cross from Steven Gerrard which the Frenchman simply had to nod home. notas_de_prensa_archivo
