LIVERPOOL FC: HYYPIA: WE ARE AWARE OF OWEN THREAT

Sami Hyypia has warned his teammates that they must keep an eye on former Reds striker Michael Owen when he returns to Anfield to captain Newcastle United on Saturday.

/noticias.info/ The big Finn is an admirer of the former Anfield number 10 and he said Owen is still capable of causing problems to any defence in world football.

"Of course we will have to keep an eye on Michael, but they also have many more players who can score goals and cause us problems so it is not only Michael who we will need to watch," said Hyypia.

"But if we deliver a good team performance like we did against West Ham I don't think we need to worry about any striker who comes up against us.

"Michael is a great goalscorer, though, and we need to be very careful with him around.

"He was exactly the same in training as he was in games. He was very quick, he could turn really well and he was a very good goalscorer.

"I don't know if it is an advantage for us that we know him because he knows us also, but we will see.

"Michael was a very good servant to Liverpool and he scored many goals for us while he was here.

"The FA Cup Final (against Arsenal in 2001) is probably the thing he will be remembered for most because the two goals he scored that day won us the cup. But he also scored goals in many other big games and he was part of some special times for this club."

The Finland international was on the bench for the midweek win over West Ham when he was given a rest by Rafael Benitez, and he admits he was impressed by what he saw.

"The performance against West Ham was very good," he added. "Everyone did their job really well and we scored four nice goals.

"It was good for Fernando to get another hat trick as well and his confidence and the team's is very high at the moment.

"When we played Newcastle a few months ago it was one of our best performances of the season and we have to try to do the same at Anfield on Saturday.

"Everyone knows the Newcastle supporters are very demanding and when we started very well up there I think the fans turned against the team a little bit.

"We have the upper hand this time because we are at home and we have to use that to our advantage.

"Ideally, we will get off to a good start and get our fans righ behind us. But at this stage of the season it is all about getting the three points – that is the most important thing."

Hyypia also firmly believes Liverpool will take that coveted fourth placed spot and said it's in Liverpool's hands.

"Of course I am confident of finishing fourth," said the Reds number four. "If you don't have the confidence and the belief, you shouldn't be on the pitch to play." notas_de_prensa_archivo
