FOOTBALL EUROPE: Leverkusen close on UEFA Cup rivals

Gekas strikes again
Fresh from their UEFA Cup Round of 16 first-leg 1-0 victory over Hamburg, Leverkusen had their European match winner to thank for opening the scoring again against Hannover. Theofanis Gekas struck after half an hour and Tranquillo Barnetta added a second just nine minutes later to give the home side a comfortable half-time advantage. There was no further scoring in the second period and the win takes Leverkusen on to 41 points from 23 games.

Goalless draw
Hamburg could not break down the Nürnberg defence and had to settle for a point which keeps them in third place and the last of the Bundesliga's UEFA Champions League spots. It could have been worse for Hamburg, who had goalkeeper Frank Rost to thank for saving a Zvezdan Mismović penalty just before half-time. The draw lifts last season's German Cup winners one place to 16th although they still remain in the relegation zone, a point behind DSC Arminia Bielefeld. notas_de_prensa_archivo
