FOOTBALL EUROPE: Bodmer breaks Bordeaux hearts

/noticias.info/ A first-half double from Mathieu Bodmer inspired Olympique Lyonnais to a 4-2 victory against Ligue 1 title rivals FC Girondins de Bordeaux and a six-point lead over Laurent Blanc's team.

Bodmer double
Going into the fixture at Stade de Gerland, Bordeaux were aware that three points would draw them level with Lyon. However, Les Gones were quick out of the blocks and established a two-goal lead inside the opening 24 minutes, courtesy of Bodmer. The midfielder first turned in Fabio Grosso's driven left-wing centre on 12 minutes, before sending a sumptuous half-volley past Ulrich Ramé just after the half's midway point.

Benzema strike
Ten minutes before the break, Bordeaux gained a foothold in the match when Wendel fired a free-kick past Grégory Coupet, but Karim Benzema restored Lyon's two-goal advantage after 59 minutes with his 17th league goal of the season. Fernando Cavenaghi replied from the penalty spot after Jérémy Toulalan upended Mathieu Chalmé, but Bordeaux could not find an equaliser and Kader Keita confirmed the points for Lyon in added time when he tapped in from close range.

'Relieved'
Meanwhile, Olympique de Marseille's upturn in form shows no sign of relenting after a 2-0 success against AS Saint-Etienne at the Stade Vélodrome. Following a goalless opening period in which coach Eric Gerets described himself as being "relieved as our opponents were on par with us during the first half", Marseille struck twice in six minutes after the break. First, Mathieu Valbuena latched on to a poor defensive header to clip in the opener on 59 minutes, before Taye Taiwo doubled the lead when he headed in a free-kick from the right.

Landmark match
Les Verts, who were celebrating their 2000th top-flight fixture, remain in eleventh, while Marseille's seventh win in their last nine Ligue 1 matches, leaves the UEFA Cup contenders three points adrift of third-placed AS Nancy-Lorraine on 45 points. notas_de_prensa_archivo
