FOOTBALL EUROPE: Win leaves Rangers hungry for four

/noticias.info/ Kris Boyd and Barry Ferguson are setting their sights on more silverware for Rangers FC after ending a three-year trophy drought by lifting the Scottish League Cup with a penalty shoot-out win against Dundee United FC on Sunday.

Virtual hat-trick
Striker Boyd was the hero for Walter Smith's side at Hampden Park coming off the substitutes' bench to level in both regulation time and extra time before scoring the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out. "It meant a lot to me to come on and score those goals," said Boyd who took his tally to 20 for the season. "I have waited a long time to be a winner with Rangers. I don't care that I scored twice in open play and the third came during the shoot-out. I made sure I left Hampden with the match ball and it's something I'll treasure. This is my first medal and it's the proudest moment of my career."

Hungry for more
The victory gave Rangers their 25th League Cup success and means the Ibrox club are still on course for a domestic treble and an unprecedented quadruple, with Sporting Clube de Portugal awaiting them in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. "There's nothing like a big cup final win to whet your appetite for even more success," said captain Ferguson. "This is the first big win for a lot of these boys and I know they want to do it again this season. We had to work hard to beat United but I think the fact we came from behind twice, and did so again in the shoot-out, shows the spirit in the squad."

Smith thrilled
"It was a terrific cup final and a terrific achievement," added manager Walter Smith. "Playing this final after a tiring game in Germany [against Werder Bremen] in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night; I'm delighted and it speaks volumes of my players." Rangers meet Sporting in Glasgow on 3 April with the return in Lisbon seven days later. notas_de_prensa_archivo
