UEFA ORGANISATION: UEFA accepts BSkyB bid
/noticias.info/ UEFA today announced the award of a major package of UEFA Champions League media rights for 2009-2012 in the United Kingdom to BSkyB.
Competitive market
As anticipated in a particularly competitive market, offers for the various packages of rights available were received from several of the UK's major broadcasters. After the first round of bidding, BSkyB emerged as the clear winner for a number of rights packages including exclusive coverage of all live matches and highlights on a Tuesday and all games on a Wednesday with the exception of the first-choice fixture. BSkyB's package also includes simultaneous coverage of the UEFA Champions League final and UEFA Super Cup, comprehensive highlights, delayed match coverage and magazine programmes.
Internet and mobile
The rights will be widely exploited across all broadcast platforms ensuring significant audiences and exposure throughout the UK. Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3, Sky Sports Xtra and Sky Sports HD1, HD2 and HD3 will continue to show live games. In addition, fans in the UK will benefit from live streaming of Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 and Sky Sports News on the internet via skysports.com and on mobile via Sky Mobile TV. By virtue of its commitment to industry-leading production standards and its unrivalled programming capacity, Sky Sports has proved to be an exceptional partner for the UEFA Champions League in the UK for a number of years.
Second round of bidding
UEFA has received a number of offers for the remaining rights. However, the competitive nature of the bidding has been such that the award of these rights has yet to be concluded. UEFA has therefore invited a second round of bidding, and a separate statement in relation to the award of these rights will be made in due course. Commenting on the award of rights in the UK to BSkyB, UEFA General Secretary David Taylor said: "UEFA is absolutely delighted to renew its partnership with BSkyB in the United Kingdom. The level of their commitment confirms the strength of broadcaster interest in the UEFA Champions League as the world's top club football competition."
