PSV: “Chances were far and few between, with so much at stake”

When Vergoossen was asked how he rated PSV’s chances of retaining the title for the fourth season running, he gave his stock reply: “The championship race is not over. We are in a good position, but it is not decided yet. There are still five games to go”, he said, immediately breaking off a discussion. “I thought we could win the game after the break. We knew chances would be far and few between, with so much at stake for both teams.” Vergoossen admitted that PSV found it hard to cope with Ajax’s attacking style of football in the first half. “It was not easy for us to mark their forwards. Huntelaar played in a withdrawn role and their strikers played on the wings, but constantly tried to cut into the box. We sometimes were slow in taking over defensive positions. After the break it was a very physical game”, concluded Vergoossen.

Ajax coach Adrie Koster was not impressed by the level of play. “We had been looking forward to tonight’s game, and had hoped to surprise PSV by playing Huntelaar in a different formation, off the strikers. We put in a fine first half display and had some chances to open the scoring, but unfortunately we failed to take them. The second half was a more evenly contested affair. We lacked the strength to create great opportunities. PSV had their moments as well.
