PSV: Alcides and Mendez not available aginst FC Groningen

The Holland international midfielder has returned to full fitness after he sustained a freak injury during a game of dodge ball at training, because of which he was ruled out of the vital clash with Ajax.

The Brazilian Eduardo Alcides is ruled out of tomorrow night’s clash with FC Groningen, who currently sit sixth in the table. The defender picked up a knock to his knee during the clash with Ajax and did not train at De Herdgang on Friday. Ecuadorian midfielder Edison Méndez received his fifth yellow card for the season during the Ajax game and is suspended. Midfielder Otman Bakkal is troubled by a minor back problem, but is available. Other than that, Vergoossen has no selection worries.

With five league games to go, the title race in Holland hots up. “We will play five more Cup finals and will obviously need to win our games in order to maintain a four-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie”, told Vergoossen media representatives at the press briefing “We need to show concentration for 90 minutes when we take on FC Groningen. We failed to do so in our encounter with FC Utrecht, although we had one week without further obligations to prepare ourselves.”

Some players may have left FC Groningen during the January transfer window, but Vergoossen is still impressed by the performances of Saturday’s opponents. “They are sixth in the table play and will provide formidable opposition as they have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League play-off places.”
