LIVERPOOL FC: ON THIS DAY: MARCH 22, 1936
It was a sad day in LFC history as our first ever manager, John McKenna, passed away at the age of 81.
/noticias.info/ 'Honest' John as he was known, was one of the greatest driving forces for Liverpool throughout the early years.
The Irishman was a friend of the club's founder John Houlding and would go on to serve as a Director from the formation of the club through until 1922.
He had initally handled first-team affairs for the first four years, in which time Liverpool progressed into the topflight, before he was finally replaced by Tom Watson in the summer of 1896.
In 1915, McKenna handed over the chairmanship to WR Williams, but remained at the helm.
After over 40 years of service to the Reds it was perhaps fitting that when he died in March 1936, his coffin was carried through the city by three Liverpool players and three Everton players, and a commemorative plaque to him remains in the foyer in Anfield to this day. notas_de_prensa_archivo
