Clark makes major move at WGC CA Championship
/noticias.info/ South Africa’s Tim Clark made a major move while Geoff Ogilvy held on for a one-stroke lead over fellow Australian Adam Scott when play was suspended due to heavy rain in the World Golf Championship-CA Championship third round.
The pocket-rocket from Umkomaas in Kwazulu Natal is one of the shortest hitters on the PGA Tour and relies heavily on exceptional iron play.
On Saturday, he pulled out all the stops with a birdie rampage. Clark collected seven birdies in 14 holes to catch up to world number one Tiger Woods and Fijian Vijay Singh when the suspension was called.
The trio, at 11-under through 14, is just three shots adrift of Ogilvy.
Woods was level-par for his round after three-putting for a bogey at the second and birdying the par-four seventh. Singh displayed top form with seven birdies and an eagle to vault to eight-under for his round with two holes to go.
Play was first stopped at 17h15 because of rain and thunder and restarted, but three hours later organisers called it off for the day as several greens were under water. The third round will be completed on Sunday.
Scott especially, was frustrated the weather spoilt a chance to capitalise on his run. "It was our day and it was cut off way too short," the Australian told reporters
Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, was 14-under overall following birdies at the seventh and ninth but was not happy with his performance.
"I wasn't hitting the ball great this morning. I felt like I missed every fairway I played," he said.
Scott, however, was in excellent shape after firing a four-under 32 on the front nine including an explosive start as he sank a 16-foot putt for an eagle three at the first in perfect response to his disappointing ending to Friday's round when he bogeyed the final two holes.
"I thought if I could get off to a fast start I could kind of wipe that bad finish out and get right back in the hunt," said Scott.
Woods, chasing his 10th win in 11 tournaments worldwide, was disappointed with his putting.
"I need to hit the ball a touch better but most importantly make some putts and get my speed right," he said.
"I am only three back, still right there and there are a lot of holes to be played on Sunday, hopefully I can get it going and get hot for the rest of the day."
