Pappas stays in the hunt at Porto Rico Open
/noticias.info/ American Bo van Pelt maintained his stranglehold at the Porto Rico Open in Rio Grande, but his advantage has been cut to one by Greg Kraft and Briny Baird and South Africa’s Brenden Pappas is just two behind.
The South African closed the gap on Van Pelt with a third round 69 that lifted him to a tie for fourth with American Jerry Kelly on 11-under-par 205.
Van Pelt, who leads for the third consecutive round, carded a one-under 71 to top the leaderboard at 13-under total of 203.
Van Pelt, seeking his first PGA Tour win, bogeyed the ninth and 14th and birdied the second, fifth and 16th, while Pappas made four birdies and a lone bogey at the par-3 16th.
"I hit it really good the first eight holes and then an elbow injury I had a couple of weeks ago flared up on me on nine," Van Pelt told reporters.
"I didn't have a very good tee shot, bogeyed there, and made two good shots on 10 and didn't convert and in the end it was a bit of a struggle."
This is the third-best position that Brenden Pappas has been in after 54 holes in his PGA Tour career.
He was tied for second in the 2003 Chrysler Classic of Tucson (four back), tied for second in the 2003 Greater Milwaukee Open (one back) and tied for seventh in the 2003 BellSouth Classic (six back).
Third round leaderboard:
203 Bo van Pelt USA 64-68-71
205 Brenden Pappas 67-69-69 (T4)
