Puerto Rico Open: Third-Round Notebook

/noticias.info/ RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- A total of 81 players made the 36-hole cut, which came at even-par 144. Current PGA TOUR policy states that if more than 79 professionals make the cut, then a 54-hole cut will be implemented with the low 70 players (and ties) advancing to Sunday play. A total of 75 players made the 54-hole cut, which came at 1-over-par 217. Those six players who did not make the cut will be paid according to their standing after 54 holes.

• This is the first time that Bo Van Pelt has held/shared the 54-hole lead in his PGA TOUR career. Van Pelt's previous career-best positions after 54 holes were a tie for fourth in the 2006 Wachovia Championship (two shots back) and a tie for fourth at the 2007 Frys.com Open (six shots back).

• Bo Van Pelt is trying to join K. J. Choi (Sony Open in Hawaii) as the only wire-to-wire winners on the PGA TOUR this year.

• This is the third-best position that Brenden Pappas has been in after 54 holes in his PGA TOUR career. He was tied for second in the 2003 Chrysler Classic of Tucson (four back), tied for second in the 2003 Greater Milwaukee Open (one back) and tied for seventh in the 2003 BellSouth Classic (six back).

• Third-round leaders/co-leaders have won gone on to win six of 11 times in stroke-play events this year. Those winners are K. J. Choi in the Sony Open in Hawaii, Tiger Woods in the Buick Invitational, J. B Holmes in the FBR Open, Phil Mickelson in the Northern Trust Open, Brian Gay in the Mayakoba Golf Classic and Tiger Woods in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

• Joey Sindelar, who turns 50 on March 30, is making his final start on the PGA TOUR this week before moving to the Champions Tour. He will make his debut on that Tour at the Cap Cana Championship in the Dominican Republic April 4-6. Sindelar carded rounds of 70-75 and missed the cut.

• Four players from Puerto Rico received sponsor exemptions this week. Max Alverio missed the 36-hole cut, while amateur Rafael Campos and professional Wilfredo Morales missed the 54-hole cut and professional Miguel Suarez (68-72-77--217) is tied for 69th place.

• Best rounds of the day on Saturday were 66s from Ryan Blaum, Greg Kraft and Jerry Kelly and 67s from Tommy Armour III and Tim Wilkinson. Players who were bogey-free in the third round were Gavin Coles, Neal Lancaster and Shaun Micheel, all of whom carded 69s.
