LIVERPOOL FC: RIISE: IT'S BEEN TOO LONG
John Arne Riise admits Liverpool fans have had to wait too long for a league victory over fierce rivals Manchester United.
/noticias.info/ The experienced left-back was part of the last Reds side to beat United in the league back in April 2004, when a Danny Murphy penalty silenced Old Trafford.
Riise can recall the feeling on the coach as he and his teammates made their way back across the M62 – and it's an experience he's dying to repeat.
He said: "I was playing that day and it was a great feeling. Like I say though, it was a long time ago.
"But the system we are playing with at the moment is working really well for us and I think Man Utd know we're in good form. We are playing really well and we're confident. We are going there to try to get a win.
"It's not going to be easy because we'll be going to Old Trafford to try to get a result against a great, great team."
Riise's first taste of the north-west rivalry came in the 2001 Charity Shield, a game Gerard Houllier's Liverpool won 2-1.
The Norway international admits it was quite an eye opener.
"I wasn't really aware of the big rivalry between the clubs before I arrived," he said. "I was more aware of Liverpool and Everton, which everyone knows about.
"But now I think Liverpool versus Man Utd is a bigger game from the European view, if you like. To be part of a game like that is unbelievable for a player. The whole team looks forward to it."
Today's game will see the Premier League's two in-form players take to the pitch: Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres.
While the former's 33 goals make him a front-runner for Player of the Year, Riise claims the fact Torres arrived in England just eight months ago makes his own tally of 27 all the more remarkable.
He said: "He's been unbelievable. I mean, it's not easy for a player to come from another country. People expect so much money from a striker when you've paid a lot of money, but he's been absolutely brilliant.
"His scoring record is getting ridiculous because he's scoring in every game. Thankfully he plays for us. I enjoy having him in the team." notas_de_prensa_archivo
