UEFA CUP: Pogrebnyak up among UEFA Cup's finest
/noticias.info/ Pavel Pogrebnyak's four goals in as many UEFA Cup ties have propelled the FC Zenit St. Petersburg forward to joint top of the competition's goalscoring chart – and jeopardised the chances of a FC Bayern München player taking the top-scorer accolade.
Potent Pogrebnyak
Bayern's Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski occupy three of the top eight places in the table, which takes into account goals scored from the first round onwards. And with three of the other players listed no longer involved in the tournament, the in-form Pogrebnyak has emerged as the most serious rival to the Bundesliga leaders' free-scoring trio. Pogrebnyak, 24, scored in each leg of the Round of 32 defeat of Villarreal CF, and followed that up by scoring twice more in the second leg against Olympique de Marseille to secure the Russian champions' place in the quarter-finals. He is now on seven goals, the same as Bayern's top scorer Toni.
Bayern prolific
Bayern having scored more than five goals in three UEFA Cup matches this season – they average 2.8 goals per game from ten fixtures – and with their leading trio's tally accounting for 17 of their 28-goal haul, Pogrebnayk faces stiff competition if he is to finish top of the pile. Stefan Kiessling, the only other active player currently in the running, failed to add to his tally of six in Bayer 04 Leverkusen's elimination of fellow German side Hamburger SV. The quarter-final ties commence on Thursday, with the second legs taking place a week later on 10 April. notas_de_prensa_archivo
