LIVERPOOL FC: ON THIS DAY: MAY 1, 1965
Bill Shankly's Liverpool secured the first FA Cup success in our history as we edged out Leeds United after extra-time at Wembley.
/noticias.info/ Roger Hunt and Ian St John got the goals as we ran out 2-1 winners after the match had finished goalless after 90 minutes.
Full-back Gerry Byrne famously played through the pain barrier after breaking his collar bone early on during the clash with Don Revie's men.
Ron Yeats was the skipper that day, an occasion he remembers as a somewhat dour game of football.
"I must admit I wouldn't have said it was the most memorable game," he said in an interview many years later.
"It was a bloody awful game. The only memorable thing was it was the first time we picked up the FA cup since Liverpool started and I was fortunate to be the captain of the side and pick the cup up from the Queen.
"I'll always remember after I had picked it up and was going down the stairs, the first guy I went to on the pitch was Bill Shankly.
"I said 'Boss this is your cup, because without you we wouldn't have won any cup.' He said: 'Ron, I am very proud of you, I am proud of the lads. We will go on to bigger things than this.'"
Elsewhere on this day in LFC history, Jamie Carragher broke Ian Callaghan's European appearance record as we beat Chelsea to book a place in the 2007 Champions League final in Athens.
Daniel Agger got us off to a great start when he fired in a well-worked free-kick to make it 1-0 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate.
In extra-time Dirk Kuyt had an effort wrongly ruled out for offside before the match was eventually decided on spot-kicks.
Liverpool prevailed 4-1 with Pepe Reina saving efforts from Geremi and Arjen Robben while Kuyt found some form of justice by converting the decisive penalty for the Reds. notas_de_prensa_archivo
