Nortel Voice Security Services Providing Peace of Mind for Spring ISD

New Technology, Services Offering Enhances Protection of Private Information

HOUSTON – One of the fastest growing and most progressive school districts in the United States has turned to Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to safeguard the private information of 36,500 students, faculty and staff by protecting its voice network from hackers and fraudulent use.

Spring Independent School District** (ISD), located 20 miles north of downtown Houston, is among the first to use Nortel's new Voice Security Services, which also include monitoring and management capabilities that are helping Spring ISD reduce telecom expenses across schools, administrative offices and maintenance facilities in 40 locations.

Nortel Voice Security Services combine patented technology from SecureLogix** with Nortel security expertise to help educational institutions and other enterprises secure multi-vendor, multi-technology voice networks.

These services include assessment of network vulnerabilities, 'best practices' consulting and implementation of the SecureLogix* ETM* System**, a suite of integrated telecom applications that protect critical network resources from telephony-based attack and abuse and simplify voice network management. Nortel provides the ETM System under a new worldwide resale agreement with SecureLogix.

"We need protection not only from phone line abuse but also from attacks that could impact applications and compromise information on our converged voice and data network," said Chris Kent, director, network services, Spring Independent School District. Nortel's Voice Security Services with SecureLogix technology protect Spring ISD from tampering, service disruption and abuse across a voice environment including VoIP, legacy TDM and multimedia communications, regardless of telecom provider or telecom service package.

Dangerous 'back doors' into the data network are closed to hackers through tight control of modem access and phone network use. Unauthorized dial-up connections to the Internet are denied, protecting access to proprietary information and preventing virus infections over phone lines. Bomb threats have been reduced by blocking calls without caller ID.

Spring ISD is purchasing Nortel Voice Security Services through Nortel channel partner Layer 3 Communications.
