LESCOTT SIGNALS INTENT

That is the view of Joleon Lescott, who is also eyeing silverware next term.

Lescott also allayed any worries about his own fitness.

He said: “We finished the season on a real high which was important.

“We had been up there most of the year, so we deserved to hang on to fifth place. It’s probably been the best season I’ve experienced, personally.

“Over the past three or four years, the club have shown that they are willing to progress by strengthening the squad and if we can do that during the summer, we will be looking to get fourth place this time next year."After finishing three of the last four seasons inside the top six, Lescott believes the Toffees are becoming a recognised force - capable of mounting a serious challenge in both league and cups.

“We know it is going to be hard but if we can have a season like the one just gone, I don’t think too many people will complain," he said.

"If we could get to a cup final and finish fifth, I think that would be better than finish fourth and not winning something.”

Everton's player of the season would have linked up with England for games against the USA and Trinidad and Tobago, had he not required a strengthening injection to his knee.

Lescott explained that the procedure is nothing to worry about and the he is now - along with the rest fo the squad - relishing the 2008/09 campaign.

“It’s a shame to miss those friendlies but I played 59 games this season, including for England, but it’s nothing major,” said Lescott.

“I’ll be ready to go again on the first day of pre-season. The medical staff and management reckon I just need some rest.

“It’s not an injury or because my knee has flared up. All I needed was a strengthening injection. I know that it will be fine. All the lads were saying after Sunday that they can’t wait to get back and if we can get a few additions, who knows what we can achieve?” notas_de_prensa_archivo
