Liverpool announced that Gerard Houllier was to step down from his position as manager on this day in May 2004.

/noticias.info/ A press conference was held at Anfield which allowed Houllier to say a fond farewell to Liverpool FC.

Houllier arrived on Merseyside in July 1998 when he was appointed joint manager of the Reds alongside Roy Evans. He took over as sole boss in November 1998 and started Liverpool back on the road to success.

He won his first trophy in 2001 when the Reds beat Birmingham City to claim the Worthington Cup in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. It was to be the start of an historic treble as his young side beat Arsenal to win the FA Cup thanks to Michael Owen's late show, then overcame Spanish side Alaves 5-4 in an incredible UEFA Cup final in Dortmund.

Houllier led the Reds to a total of five trophies in 2001, with the Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup also added to the Anfield cabinet.

The following season, Houllier came close to winning the Premier League title but the Reds had to settle for second in the end behind champions Arsenal. This came after having major heart surgery in October 2001, but he returned to managerial duties in March 2002 against Roma at Anfield.

Houllier's last trophy was the Carling Cup in 2003 when Liverpool beat arch rivals Manchester United in Cardiff. notas_de_prensa_archivo
