ON THIS DAY: MAY 26, 1989
It was a night to forget for Liverpool who had the Championship snatched right out of their hands in stoppage time with Michael Thomas scoring a famous winner at the Anfield Road end.
/noticias.info/ George Graham's Arsenal went into the game needing to win 2-0 to claim the title. Hopes were high at half-time for Kenny Dalglish's side that number 18 was about to come to Anfield when the scores were level.
There was controversy for the Gunners' opening goal when Alan Smith met a free-kick to head Arsenal into the lead. Liverpool led strong protests, claiming Smith hadn't touched the ball from what was an indirect free-kick. Despite the protests the goal was given and the rest, as they say, is history.
With seconds left on the clock Smith's pass found Thomas charging through the middle and he toe-poked the ball past Bruce Grobbelaar to give the Gunners the title.
Thomas, of course, was later to become a Red and he scored a brilliant goal at Wembley when Liverpool won the FA Cup against Sunderland.
Elsewhere on this day in LFC history, Matt Busby was born in 1909. Although he had success as a manager with Manchester United, a lot of people tend to forget that he was a former captain of Liverpool before he went to Old Trafford. notas_de_prensa_archivo
