LIVERPOOL FC: Sir Paul ready to rock Anfield

Sir Paul McCartney has revealed he can't wait to play at Anfield on Sunday in what will be the highlight of the Liverpool Capital of Culture Year.

/noticias.info/ The legendary former Beatle will take to the stage on the hallowed turf and has promised a spectacular show for the Liverpool Sound concert.

This is only the second major musical event to be staged at Anfield following the Hillsborough Justice concert in May 1997. Sir Paul didn't play at the event but he appeared on the charity single 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' which was released in the aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster.

Joining Sir Paul on the bill will be The Zutons, Kaiser Chiefs and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters.

Sir Paul said: "I think it will be a great evening and I'm ready to party.

"The thing about it was, the concert was talked about last year and there were a lot of exciting ideas like Salthouse Dock. But I said to people, make sure you can do this because I've had experience of these great ideas – it's great to talk them, but to pull them off is something else.

"I asked, do you leave this facility for the people of Liverpool? They said it was going to be filled in again, and when the figures came in it was just crazy money.

"We said, we've got to do a gig, we ought to do a gig, and they changed the venue to Anfield, and I said well, that's more practical - you don't have to build a venue. I think it will be a really nice show and a great evening.

"It's great to be playing Anfield because it's such a historical ground.

"My dad was actually born in Everton but I love the Liverpool football team as well. So I say I like them both and let people complain if they want to. I just claim special dispensation from the Pope.

"I love Liverpudlian audiences because they're my people. To them, it's one of their lads coming to play and for me, it feels like I'm playing to my mates.

"I think they're proud of what we did as the Beatles and, in the same way I'm proud of the city that I come from."

Sunday's concert at Anfield takes place on the fifth anniversary of 'Macca's' last appearance in Liverpool, when he played to over 40,000 people at the Kings Dock.

Sir Paul, who was knighted by the Queen more than a decade ago, rocked the dock just days before Liverpool was announced as Britain's European Capital of Culture host for 2008.

He added: "We've got a few little surprises up our sleeve, it will be a bit different from our normal shows.

"Dave Grohl is going to do something with us, so that will be nice.
"That's it basically. It's not that long a show. There's a curfew at this place, but I am doing a full set.

"It will be a mixture of music. The idea will be to give the audience what I think they would want."

Spectators attending the concert should note there will be no parking at Anfield and Walton Breck Road will be CLOSED all day on Sunday. You are strongly advised to travel by public transport only and not try to park in the residential streets.

We apologise for the severe disapointment that this will cause, but please understand that this is a Culture Company event for 2008, and is not organised by LFC.

The Anfield gates will open at 5pm GMT on Sunday and the concert is scheduled to finish at 10.30pm. notas_de_prensa_archivo
