ARSENAL: Internationals: Five in action ahead of Euro 2008
/noticias.info/ Arsenal.com's International Watch reports back to base on those who have temporarily swapped the red of Arsenal for the colours of their national sides. Read on for the latest news on how they all got on. Arsenal.com will have the latest injury news from Arsène Wenger's press conference on Friday.
William Gallas
France 2-0 Ecuador, May 27, France 0-0 Paraguay, 31 May, France v Columbia, June 3
France have yet to concede in two warm-up matches as their preparations for the European Championships intensify. Gunners captain William Gallas is the only Club representative for Les Bleus but did not feature in the 2-0 win over Ecuador, nor the goalless draw with Paraguay.
Cesc Fabregas
Spain 2-1 Peru, May 27, Spain v United States, June 4
Spain stretched their magnificent unbeaten run to 15 matches with a 2-1 win over Peru last week, and now face the United States as they conclude their preparations for Euro 2008. Cesc Fabregas is the only Gunner in the Spain squad and was introduced at half-time in the win over the South Americans, duly registering an assist for the match’s decisive goal. David Villa handed Luis Aragones’ outfit the lead seven minutes before the interval and despite sustained pressure in the second-half, Spain were pegged back 17 minutes from time by Hernan Rengifo. Cue Fabregas, whose cross was hammered home by Joan Capdevila in the dying minutes.
Jens Lehmann
Germany 2-2 Belarus, May 27, Germany 2-1 Serbia, May 31
Germany recovered from their disappointing 2-2 draw with Belarus, recording a 2-1 win at home to Serbia. Joachim Low’s hotly-tipped side had blown a two-goal lead against Alex Hleb’s home nation and fell behind again when Bosko Jankovic slipped the ball home on 18 minutes. Oliver Neuville and Michael Ballack struck late in the second-half to hand the Germans victory, ensuring they head into Euro 2008 in high spirits. Jens Lehmann featured throughout both games.
Lukasz Fabianski
Albania 0-1 Poland, May 27, Poland 1-1 Denmark, June 1
Lukasz Fabianski staked a strong claim for a starting berth in Euro 2008, keeping a clean sheet in Poland’s win over Albania. Maciej Zurawski notched the game’s only goal after three minutes. The Gunners stopper was unused in the final warm-up fixture for the Poles, against Denmark, as Artur Boruc took his place between the sticks. Nicklas Bendtner started for the Danes, who took the lead through Martin Vingard on 28 minutes, before Jacek Krzynowek levelled things up two minutes before half-time. That was the way it stayed.
Theo Walcott
Trinidad and Tobago 0-3 England
Theo Walcott was a second-half substitute as England finished their season with a comfortable 3-0 win in Port of Spain. The fixture, the first time the Three Lions had played in the Caribbean, marked the centenary of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation but they could not celebrate with a shock victory. Gareth Barry volleyed home after 12 minutes after slick play down the left, and Jermain Defoe slotted home shortly after exploiting some lax defending by the hosts. The Portsmouth front man added a third in the second half before being replaced by Walcott. The 19-year-old looked lively and went close to scoring late on.
Gilberto
Canada 2-3 Brazil, May 31, Brazil v Venezuela, June 6, Paraguay v Brazil, June 15, Brazil v Argentina, June 18
While much of the focus will be on Europe in the coming weeks, Gilberto and his Brazilian team-mates will continue their bid to reach the World Cup in two years’ time. The South Americans bundled their way past Canada, their first win over the North Americans in three attempts, in the first of two friendly matches. Gilberto featured in the match and registered an assist; his cross was headed home by Luis Fabiano just before the break, making it 2-1 to the visitors. Diego’s early strike was cancelled out by Mike Klukowski before Fabiano’s nod, but the scores were level on 56 minutes when Julian de Guzman struck. Unfortunately for Guzman it was his wayward back pass which allowed Robinho the chance to snatch a winner seven minutes later.
Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue
Kirin Cup
The Ivory Coast finished bottom of the table in the three-team Kirin Cup, with Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue both in the squad. The Elephants were held 1-1 by Paraguay in the tournament’s opening fixture, before suffering defeat at the hands of host nation Japan two days later. Keiji Tamada was the match-winner midway through the opening period as an under-strength Ivory Coast struggled to assert any sort of authority. Japan’s subsequent draw with Paraguay ensured the hosts emerged triumphant, lifting the trophy for the second year running. notas_de_prensa_archivo
