ARSENAL: Euro 2008: Senderos is stunned by Sverkos

Philippe Senderos played a full 90 minutes but could not stop the Czech Republic inflicting a 1-0 defeat on Switzerland in the opening game of Euro 2008.

The Arsenal defender looked solid alongside Patrick Muller as the centre-back pairing kept Czech striker Jan Koller relatively quiet in Basle. But a second half-strike from substitute Vaclav Sverkos has left the co-hosts with an uphill battle to qualify from Group A.

Sverkos was quickest to react to a header over the top of the Swiss defence with 20 minutes left and beat goalkeeper Diego Benaglio with a low effort.

Switzerland probably deserved a draw but Alexander Frei was twice denied by Czech keeper Petr Cech and Johan Vonlanthen's volley hit the bar late on. To compound their woes, the co-hosts' captain Frei limped out of the game - and the tournament - just before half time.

Arsenal's other Swiss representative at Euro 2008, Johan Djourou, did not feature against the Czechs. He will be hoping to play a part when Switzerland face Turkey in their second Group A fixture on Wednesday. notas_de_prensa_archivo
