ARSENAL: Double Club captures excitement of Euro 2008

/noticias.info/ Arsenal Football Club’s award-winning education programme, the Arsenal Double Club, is ensuring that while the home nations may not be participating in the Euros this summer, school children can still show their support for other European teams during class time.

The Arsenal Double Club is an initiative which harnesses the power and popularity of football and fuses it with classroom subjects to provide innovative teaching resources. The 45-minute classes are followed by a 45-minute football coaching session with an Arsenal in the Community coach — mirroring the two halves of the beautiful game.

The pioneering education scheme which began in 1998 with simple numeracy and literacy modules has continually evolved reaching more children and young people and has since grown its portfolio of subjects to include geography, science, modern languages and history among others.

Arsenal Double Club’s traditional numeracy and literacy resources have been updated to reflect elements of the exciting European tournament taking place in Switzerland and Austria, which kicks off this weekend.

Arsenal players, including Euro 2008 hopeful, Cesc Fabregas, have contributed to the modern language modules, participating in bespoke Spanish Double Club Q&A sessions on DVD which form part of the resource packs used in schools in London and beyond.

Arsenal Double Club Co-ordinator Scott Cohen said: “Despite the home nations not being involved in the Euros this summer, the language modules engage the young people and give them a platform to take an interest in the football being played throughout the tournament by Spain, France and Germany.

"The updated numeracy and literacy modules which focus on the Arsenal players involved in Euro 2008 will hopefully motivate even more pupils to improve their skills before the end of the school year.”

Arsenal’s language Double Club modules have been hailed by the European Commissioner for Multi-Lingualism Leonard Orban and have recently been nominated for an award from CILT - the National Centre for Languages, the Government’s recognised centre of expertise on languages. notas_de_prensa_archivo
