SPAIN CRUISE TO OPENING MATCH WIN
Fernando Torres and Spain are off to a winning start in Euro 2008 after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Russia in Innsbruck thanks to a hat-trick from David Villa.
/noticias.info/ In an entertaining Group D clash, Torres was instrumental in the Spanish opening the scoring after 20 minutes when he weighted a pass perfectly into the path of Villa who made no mistake from close range.
The Valencia man doubled the lead before the break with a clinical finish after good play from Iniesta and then completed his hat-trick with another fine effort after the break.
By that stage Torres was off the pitch having been replaced by Cesc Fabregas, but it was the Liverpool man Villa was first to run to and celebrate with after completing his treble.
Russia pulled a goal back six minutes from time through Roman Pavlyuchenko but it was too little too late for Guus Hiddink's men and Fabregas put the seal on a fine Spanish display with a headed goal in the final seconds of the match.
Xabi Alonso featured for the final 13 minutes of the game, while Pepe Reina and Alvaro Arbeloa were unused substitutes as Luis Aragones' men got their campaign off to the perfect start.
Spain are next in action when they play their second match of the tournament against defending champions Greece. notas_de_prensa_archivo
