US ELECTIONS 08: BARACK OBAMA: Blog: Virginia Beach Students Get Ready For November

/noticias.info/ Jennifer, a grad student at Virginia Tech, made herself a promise this past January: If Obama were to win the nomination, then she would do everything she could to help him get elected as President. And this summer she is keeping that promise.

In February I joined the Students For Obama Virginia Tech Chapter and we did absentee voter registration drives for the primary. It was a great success and I was inspired to do more.

I remember watching this video that was on the Obama website about youth and how their votes helped him win in Iowa and other states. Considering the percentage of young people who voted for Obama, I figured it would be a great idea to go where the youth are.

I graduated from high school in Virginia Beach and I remember how they set up their graduation practices all in the same place. I also knew that Virginia Beach went Republican in the last presidential election and I decided that needed to change.

About two weeks ago, I called the school activities coordinator and they agreed that I could set up a Get Out The Vote drive at the practices. Next I set up the event on the website, and in less than a week, more then 30 people signed up to help over the course of two days.

Together we set up tables where the students would be entering and exiting their graduation practices so we could be sure to get as many graduating seniors as possible. I believe they say ‘if you build it, they will come.’ We also went through the crowds with clipboards.


Many students were very anxious to register and they would take it upon themselves to yell out “Obama!” or excitedly tell us that they were going to vote for Obama.

During the graduation practice of one school, some graduating seniors took it upon themselves to get out the word and they encouraged large numbers of their friends to register. It was exciting to see all the graduating seniors registering to vote and I know all the volunteers were very pleased – we knew it was time well spent.

After two days of graduation practices, we [registered] 561 new voters! It is safe to say that all the volunteers, and many graduating seniors, from Virginia Beach are Fired Up and Ready To Go. notas_de_prensa_archivo
