ON THIS DAY: JUNE 12, 1984
Liverpool said farewell to a midfield legend on this day in 1984 when European Cup winning captain Graeme Souness brought a glittering Anfield career to a close by joining Italian side Sampdoria.
/noticias.info/ The tough-tackling Scot made 359 appearances for the Reds notching 55 goals along the way and it was perhaps fitting that his final act as a Liverpool player was to lift the club's fourth European Cup after the penalty shoot-out win over Roma in the Stadio Olimpico.
Souness won five League titles, three European Cups and four League Cups in his time at Anfield and would later return as manager, although he would not enjoy the same level of success during his time in the hot-seat.
Elsewhere on this day in LFC history Ray Houghton scored the only goal of the game as the Republic of Ireland shocked England in a Euro '88 game in Stuttgart.
Bobby Robson's side included John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and future red Mark Wright. notas_de_prensa_archivo
