GOLF: PGA: Westwood remaining calm

/noticias.info/ Lee Westwood has stressed he will continue to remain calm on the course after putting himself in contention for a first-ever US Open title with a steady one-under-par 70 in Saturday's third round.

After an even-par 71 on Friday, Westwood is two-under 211 overall and a stroke behind leader Tiger Woods.

"I've just been calm and I didn't really have too many expectations coming in here," said Westwood. "Just to try and get myself into contention and give myself a chance to win the US Open. So I've got a chance to achieve that. I'm doing exactly what I wanted to do, so I'm pleased."

Woods battled with an injured knee and turned in a mesmerising back nine for the second straight day. He eagled the par-five 13th by making a 60-foot putt, he chipped in from the rough on 17 for birdie and drained another eagle putt at the 18th. But when all was said and done, Woods and Westwood had the exact same number at the end of their scorecards - a 70.

Woods' round of one-under put him at three-under 210 for the championship and Westwood will join the world's top-ranked player in the final group today looking for his first major while Woods goes for number 14.

Westwood has been in contention at a US Open before. He was seventh after three rounds in 2000 and 2005 while his best finish came in 2000 when he tied for fifth.

Now he is in prime position to win his first major. It will be tough but it is about the last thing left for Westwood to add to his resume.

"Obviously the reason I practice every day is to get into position and try and win major championships," Westwood added. "I've won pretty much everything else there is to win, I think 29 tournaments now, so I proved I can win golf tournaments. But players are always rated on how many major championships they have won. So it's a good opportunity to try and win one of those." notas_de_prensa_archivo
