ARSENAL: Euro 2008: Fabregas advances to last eight
/noticias.info/ Spain 4-1 Sweden
Saturday, June 14
Tivoli Neu
Spain booked their spot in the last eight of Euro 2008 as David Villa’s stoppage-time winner defeated Sweden, but Cesc Fabregas had to be content with a place on the bench.
By the time the Arsenal man was introduced on the hour, Fernando Torres had notched his first of the tournament. Then Zlatan Ibrahimovic enhanced his own reputation with a powerful finish beneath Iker Casillas.
Fabregas’ arrival on the pitch, like it had done against Russia, brought an added dimension to Spain's game, but any threat was quelled by a well-marshalled Swedish defence. Goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson was in fine form, thwarting Marcos Senna and David Silva.
As the minutes ticked down it seemed that the spoils would be shared, but a long punt forward in the 92nd minute caused confusion in the Swedish ranks, allowing Villa a free run and shot at goal.
As a result Spain top Group D while the Swedes will need to beat Russia to ensure they progress to the Quarter-Finals. notas_de_prensa_archivo
