MOTOROLA: Motorola Completes Iceland’s Public Safety Network

Motorola to supply over 3,000 TETRA terminals

/noticias.info/ Reyjkjavik, Iceland – 17 June 2008 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it has completed the roll-out of Iceland’s nationwide public safety communications network, on behalf of Neydarlinan 112, in just 12 months.

The IP-based TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) network has 150 base stations and 22 dispatchers. The network gives public safety organizations radio communications coverage across Iceland including the peak of Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s highest mountain.

Delivered on time and on budget, the system is based on Motorola’s open standards-based Dimetra IP system. A digital voice and data network that allows public safety organizations to benefit from a wide spread geographical positioning system (GPS) and a range of secure mobile data applications.

“The new network is a significant modernization and improvement on our previous public safety network,” said Thorhallur Olafsson, managing director of Neydarlinan 112. “Improved security, reliability and coverage provide a much stronger communications platform for our public safety organizations. It will improve inter- and cross-agency communication and, as it supports data, enable new ways of communicating to improve operations and services.”

Although the standard based network supports a wide range of TETRA terminals, Motorola has also been awarded a contract to supply more than 3,000 devices to operate on the system.

“Iceland’s topology created many technical and operational challenges when it came to designing and installing the extended mission critical network. The customer team has really taken on the challenge to make the vision come true and it’s very pleasing to see the entire network up and running as originally envisaged,” said Per Lundmark, director of sales, Government & Public Safety, Motorola Nordics.

The completed network builds on Motorola’s public safety heritage, its leading position within the TETRA market and its track record in delivering mission critical managed services. Motorola has delivered over 350 TETRA networks across more than 90 countries, in both public safety and commercial environments.
