COE: PACE President condemns further executions in Japan
/noticias.info/ Strasbourg, 19.06.2008 – “I condemn the latest executions of three men in Japan, including that of a 73-year-old man,” said Lluís Maria de Puig, the President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), in a statement today.
“The secrecy surrounding executions in Japan is already deeply disturbing, and now it appears that the rate of executions under Justice Minister Hatoyama Kunio has increased, suggesting a worrying degree of arbitrariness in when the sentence of death is carried out.”
“Once again, I call on Japan to institute an immediate moratorium on executions, as a first step towards abolition. Death is not justice, and has no place in a civilised society.”
Japan holds observer status with the 47-nation Council of Europe, where no executions are carried out. notas_de_prensa_archivo
