IRAQ: Coalition forces transfer the 1,000th Humvee to Iraqis
/noticias.info/ CAMP TAJI, Iraq – Coalition forces transferred the 1,000th M-1114 up-armored Humvee to the Iraqi Security Forces here June 16. Forty-nine soldiers from the 3rd Iraqi Army Division began driver’s training at the Iraqi Army Support and Services Institute. As their training began, they put number 1,000-along with 999 and 1,001-to work fighting insurgents.
“Every week we get new Humvees and new students,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Parris who oversees the training. “They are supposed to do in-processing the first day then start training, but so many students and vehicles are arriving that sometimes they start training on day one.”
All the Humvees came from the U.S. with units deploying to Iraq. At the end of their service, the vehicles are purchased from the U.S. government through the Foreign Military Sales program. They are then refurbished at a facility here and all systems, including brakes and steering are inspected. They are repainted with the color schemes of the Iraqi Army or the Iraqi Police. Almost as soon as a vehicle is refurbished there is a new driver ready to train with it.
Since some of the students have never driven a vehicle. The three-day Humvee driver course starts with the basics of vehicle operation and driving. After the initial familiarization, the soldiers start driving-first on a small course, then on the hard road, and finally on a large off-road course, which includes night driving. notas_de_prensa_archivo
