IRAQ: Security squeeze limits al-Qaeda in Iraq hiding spots (Baghdad)
/noticias.info/ BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained two wanted men and destroyed al-Qaeda in Iraq hideouts and weapons during two operations north of Baghdad.
During a five-day operation June 14-18 near Balad, about 80 kilometers north of Baghdad, Coalition forces targeted al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorists believed to be in the area facilitating training for criminal attacks. Coalition forces discovered a terrorist hideout, a booby-trapped weapons cache, bomb-making materials and another stash of weapons, which were all safely destroyed.
Two men who approached a Coalition forces position were warned to stop and surrender. Although both were initially compliant, one man suddenly made threatening movements. Coalition forces perceived hostile intent bythe man and engaged, wounding him. The man was identified as a wanted suspect believed to be tied to AQI and was transported to a military medical facility.
In a separate operation today, Coalition forces detained a wanted man suspected of facilitating and planning AQI car bomb attacks in the Kirkuk area.
“Operations such as these are degrading AQI’s ability to spread fear,” said Maj. John Hall, MNF-I spokesman. “Coalition forces continue to uncover and destroy the terrorists’ ‘rat lines’ and hiding places, denying them safe haven.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
