GOLF: ASIAN TOUR: PRAYAD REMAINS STEADY IN JAPAN
/noticias.info/ June 22: Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng strengthened his chances for next month’s British Open after a steady performance at the Mizuno Open on Saturday.
Prayad had ended the weather-disrupted second round with a five-under-par 66 to lie in second place and a stroke behind leader Azuma Yano. He continued his solid run in the third round today as he was two under after 13 holes at the Yomiuri Country Club.
The top four finishers from the Minoza Open qualify for the British Open next month and is also the final event in a mini Order of Merit race where the top two players book their spot for the year’s third major. Prayad currently leads the mini race.
Compatriot Chawalit Plaphol, who was in a tie for eighth place after a 69 in the second round, was struggling in the third round as he was three over after 15 holes. After a 72 in the second round, Filipino Frankie Minoza was also slipping down the field as he was six-under after 16 holes.
At the Bmw International Open, Singapore’s Mardan Mamat slid to 29th place after posting a slow 74 in the third round in Munich. Mardan, who was joint fourth on Friday, struggled to a three-day total of five-under-par 211.
Local hero Martin Kaymer remained solid at the top of the pack after a 67 for a 198 total.
On the Nationwide Tour in United States, Australia’s Jarrod Lyle topped the leaderboard after a his second straight 67 for a narrow one stroke lead over D.J. Brigman at the Knoxville Open. India’s Arjun Atwal improved with a 68 and was in the mix in a tie for sixth spot aftera 204 total and four strokes behind Lyle.
On the US PGA Tour, Asian Tour’s honorary member Vijay Singh of Fiji remained in the hunt after a 64 to lie in a tie for third place at the Travelers Championship. He was three stokes behind leader Stewart Cink who posted a 65 for a 195 total.
