Robin van Persie's dreams of Euro 2008 glory were dashed by Russia in Basle on Saturday.

The Arsenal forward replaced Dirk Kuyt at half-time and immediately went close with a volley. But Russia drew first blood when Roman Pavlyuchenko struck after 56 minutes.

Holland hauled themselves level four minutes from the end of normal time when Ruud van Nistelrooy nodded Wesley Sneijder's free-kick past Igor Akinfeev.

But Russia had been the better team throughout and, inspired by playmaker Andrei Arshavin, they sealed their Semi-Final place with two extra-time goals.

Arshavin jinked down the left flank and flighted a teasing cross towards the far post for DmitriTorbinski to prod past Edwin van der Sar. Then Arshavin capped his fine display with a fierce near-post finish after latching onto a throw-in down the right. notas_de_prensa_archivo
